10 Things You Should Do When Purchasing A Lift 1. Operator Safety Training – This is one of the most important things you can do for your operators. Most large dealers offer OSHA approved operator-safety training classes. There is a charge per operator but the investment is worth it. 2. Scheduled Maintenance Plan – Purchase this through your equipment dealer, or shop around to some of the other dealers that handle that manufacturer. Make sure your plan includes the Annual Maintenance Inspection. 3. Insurance – Make sure you have this in place BEFORE operating the lift. 4. Daily, weekly, monthly inspection plan – Most manufacturers provide this in their operator manual or service manual provided with the lift. 5. Ask about the dealers extended warranty – Most large dealers offer a warranty on new lifts that are surprisingly better than the manufacturer’ s. There will be an additional charge for this warranty, but it should cover costs the manufacturer’s limited warranty doesn’t cover. You should be able to purchase a full warranty on used lifts; if the dealer doesn’t offer one, ask. 6. Register your lift – There are no titles on aerial work platforms. Protect your lift by registering the serial number at www.nerusa.com . 7. Copy the operator manual – and lock the original away in your office. Place the copy in the operator manual box located on the lift. If the copy is stolen or misplaced, you will have a replacement. 8. Hide a key in the lift – Sometimes dealers will tie wrap a key inside the lift engine compartment. This saves them time when the call comes in that the key was misplaced or lost. Do it but do not tell anyone until the time comes. 9. LoJack your lift – Equipment theft is on the rise. Ever since the episode of Cops when a stolen air compressor was recovered thanks to the LoJack silent alarm, more and more lift owners are using this system. They advertise a 90% recovery rate and a free system if your lift is not recovered in 30 days. Some insurance companies offer reduced rates on LoJacked lifts. 10. Invest in a good weatherproof, lockable cover – Cover your asset. You should do all you can to protect your lift from the elements and from other contractors. Extend the life of your equipment for pennies a day with an Aqua Block or DuraMax cover. Using an Aerial Wrap cover should result in a higher trade-in or resale value. 11.
